Alabama REAL ID Requirements

A REAL ID known in Alabama as STAR ID is not mandatory for driving or voting, but it will be required starting May 7 2025 for boarding domestic flights and entering certain federal facilities. If you do not have a valid U.S. passport you must upgrade to a STAR ID.

Difference Between Standard License and REAL ID

A standard Alabama driver license is valid for operating a vehicle and serves as a primary form of identification for most state transactions. However the STAR ID meets federal security standards established by the REAL ID Act of 2005. Choosing the STAR ID ensures you can continue to fly within the United States without carrying a second form of identification like a passport.

How to Apply for a Alabama REAL ID

To obtain your STAR ID you must complete the initial application process in person at an Alabama Law Enforcement Agency examining office. You cannot get your first STAR ID at a county probate office or license commissioner’s office as these locations are only authorized for standard renewals. It is highly recommended to schedule an appointment online through the ALEA portal to avoid long wait times. During your visit you will undergo a comprehensive document verification process where a state examiner will scan your original documents to meet federal security standards.

In-Person Requirement

Alabama STAR ID applications must be completed in person at a state operated driver license examining office. This requirement exists because the state must verify the authenticity of physical documents and capture a new high resolution photograph. This process cannot be completed online or through a local county office for the initial issuance.

Document Verification Process

During your visit you will present original versions or certified copies of your identity and residency documents to the examiner. The examiner will scan these documents into a secure system to verify their validity according to federal standards. Once the verification is complete the documents will be returned to you and you will receive a temporary permit until your permanent card arrives.

To ensure a successful application you must bring the following items:

Proof of Identity (1 document): An unexpired U.S. Passport or certified Birth Certificate.

Social Security Number (1 document): An original Social Security card or a W-2 form showing your full number.

Alabama Residency (2 documents): Utility bills or mortgage statements issued within the last 90 days.

REAL ID Fees

The cost for an Alabama STAR ID is 36.25 dollars which is the same fee as a standard driver license renewal. If you are simply upgrading your current unexpired license to a STAR ID a duplicate fee of 31.25 dollars will apply.

Schedule Your Visit

Because the STAR ID requires a full document review it is highly recommended to book an Alabama DMV Appointment in advance to reduce your wait time at the ALEA office.
